In the music industry, merch is king.

It’s where a band sells shirts, hats, hoodies, and more, and it can take months to sell any given item on a single store’s shelves.

But for indie labels and musicians, the process can be brutal.

To keep things fair and easy for their artists, some artists have taken to crowdfunding and other methods of self-funding.

“For a lot of artists, the most important thing is that the money comes out,” said Kevin Smith, founder of The Shazam Records label.

“They don’t want to be the person who has to beg their fans to buy them a product.

If you want to make money, it’s like if you’re a musician.

You’re not making music for free.”
